A weekend of Viking wood craft

5 October, 2019 - 6 October, 2019

From ship to spoon

Just as today, people in the Viking Age needed a lot of items and tools to get through the days. There were specialized crafters but most people had to be able to produce things on their own. Therefore, they needed practical knowledge of several sorts of crafts, such as forging, textile hand-craft and wood work. The Vikings were also known for being highly skilled artisans, with a love for decorations. Everything from ships to spoons were often adored with artistic ornamentation.

Join us for a weekend of wood craft. Try wood carving, learn about what the Vikings made out of wood, and how they did it.

Historical craftsman Johan Davidsson will give a lecture on wood work in the Viking age and show objects.

Lecture in Swedish 12.00 and in English at  14.00

Programme

11-17  Meet Johan the Craftsman, explore wood objects, ask all your questions and try carving.

Suitable for both children and adults.

11.30 Guided tour for children. (SV)

This one is only in Swedish, sorry. But there is a rune hunt in English for children from age 7 and up, and the youngest ones can help the tiny squirrel Tiny to become a Viking.

12.00 Lecture: Wood craft in the Viking Age, with Johan Davidsson (SV )
12.30 Myth Meets Truth, Guided tour in English (ENG)

Few eras in Nordic history are as mythical as the Viking age. Thrilling stories about brutal beasts and hard core heroes have dominated our view of the lives of Scandinavians a thousand years ago, and made the Vikings well known far outside of Sweden. The Vikings were no softies, that’s for sure, but, there’s so much more to tell.

This autumn myth meets truth at The Viking Museum. Based on Norse mythology, sagas and popular culture we explore the true life of viking age people.

Suitable for adults mainly.

13.30 Guided tour for children. (SV)
